Police are left to sort through a myriad of theories, each with glaring problems and unlikely probabilities.
“We're still trying to ascertain the why, the why, the why,” said Constable Menor, a 20-year veteran of the force. “It's the unknowns. I can't recall anything like it. It was there for a reason, it didn't drop out of the sky.” ...With picnic tables along the canal shore, the tourists from Montreal may have stopped for a moment before the plunge. But 3 a.m. would be an unusual time for a picnic in the secluded spot.
Perhaps the driver didn't know the canal was there, or perhaps she didn't care. Police have not excluded a suicide pact, murder-suicide or something as simple as the bad luck of a misguided U-turn or mistaking “drive” for “reverse.”
Another possibility is that the passengers were already dead and someone else pushed the Nissan into the canal, with the four females inside.

The G & M often disables comments. They have a group of posters who often resort to insulting each other, rather that commenting on the story.

Sarkozy falls ill while jogging
French President Nicolas Sarkozy has been taken to hospital after becoming ill while jogging, his office said.
The 54-year-old president began "feeling faint". Aides later told AFP news agency that he was suffering from a "minor" nerve complaint.
"He was immediately seen to by his doctor. He is currently undergoing extra examinations," his office said.
It happened at his weekend retreat near Versailles, outside Paris, and he was taken to a military hospital, AFP said.
Elysee Palace had no further official information.
AFP reported that Mr Sarkozy had suffered a vagal nerve attack, adding that it could involve a brief loss of consciousness and change in the heart rate.
The vagal nerve is a major nerve that runs from the abdomen to the brain and controls many functions.
Mr Sarkozy is regularly seen running and is a keen cyclist.
The Elysee Palace said earlier this month that his last medical examination - on 3 July - showed normal results for cardiovascular and blood tests.
Shortly after his election, his first medical bulletin showed him to be in "good" health.
He campaigned for greater transparency of presidential health bulletins during his presidential campaign, yet a brief hospital stay in late 2007 was not revealed until three months after it happened.
Several French presidents have been accused of glossing over health problems, notably the late Francois Mitterrand, who concealed that he was seriously ill with cancer.

This day must be marked with a white stone !
Do you normally associate a white stone with a gravestone, Claude? :-)
As you surely know, a white stone stands for happy events, Erwin.
I don't think Sarko is dying, but a long rest away from politics, at least three years I would suggest, might be good for him and for us.
Probably no simple gravestone for our Prince-President when the unthinkable happens, something more on those lines, following widowed Queen Victoria's example:
As you surely know, a white stone stands for happy events, Erwin.
Happy events, indeed, depending of course on your perspective, Claude.
Are you a Sarkozist, Erwin ? An endangered species here in France.
What do you think likeable about him ?
Anyway, I once witnessed a woman falling victim to a vagal attack, it is spectacular, but soon wears off.
I have no liking for him,Claude. He is a little, conceited megalomaniac, who thinks that he is a petit grand. That's why I thought I got the drift of your white-stone allusion.

Virtual but heartedly meant kiss for Erwin !
And there is this dreadful feeling here he is slowly destroying our country.
Marc-A
He has both rather un-French flaws and qualities.
One of his more recent good moves - definitely un-French - was to voluntarily and actively invite the venerable Cour des Comptes (the government expenditures watchdog) to openly pry into the spending of the presidency and the Elysée Palace. The French presidency's budget is in excess of 100 million euros a year (118 M in 2008)
The first time in 1500 years that a French king, emperor or president has accepted to have the budget and spending of his office scrutinized.
And it has been discovered that he and the missus spent hundreds of thousands on flowers!
I think the missus is wearing him out.
Spending on flowers is silly, but the real discovery was those much larger and huge sums spent on paying public opinion manipulation and doubtful surveys relayed on friendly newspapers.
Sarközi's hyperactivity takes a nasty blow that's how today's Le Monde describes the reactions of the domestic and international press to the French President's sudden illness while he was jogging at Versailles.I wouldn't be surprised if this episode would dent the image of this hyperactive busybody as the omnipresent indefatigable leader of the French.
